Wait, it’s not what you think. If you drive along Highway 26 between Wasaga Beach and Collingwood, you can’t miss the two blue houses under construction. When I say blue, I mean blue. Every inch of the wood framing and sheeting is blue and here is why.
Eden Oak is the developer behind a new 500 home subdivision in Collingwood called Lakeside Pointe. They have chosen to build using Bluwood technology which is a wood treatment product that protects wood from mould, fungus growth, and insects such as termites. According to Eden Oak President Bernie Torchia, Bluwood is environmentally sound and is listed by Green Build Magazine as one of the top 100 green products available in building today. It is LEED qualified and free of VOCs. Overall, Torchia says that Bluwood adds approximately $1.25 to $1.50 per square foot to construction costs but feels the advantages outweigh the additional costs.
By the way, according to their website, Bluwood will be featured on ABC’s popular Extreme Makeover Home Edition show on October 1st.
Eden Oak is also the developer behind Collingwood’s new planned, 136 acre industrial park and they have shown a willingness to be creative and open to community needs. I’m looking forward to seeing how the marketplace reacts to this innovative new construction process.
